DCEC to host mingle event

The college’s Diversity and Community Enhancement Committee (DCEC) will host a mingle event for staff, faculty and graduate students from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 7, in the Office of Multicultural Programs in 123 Chambers Building. Refreshments will be served.

Workforce Education Graduate Student Association offers three speakers in April

The Workforce Education Graduate Student Association (WEGSA) will host three free speaker events in April. Attendance is free and the events will be livestreamed via Zoom and recorded. The events are:

  • Executive Presence: Conduct Becoming the Corner Office, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 4;
  • Managing Leadership: A Symbiosis, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 5; and
  • Theory, evidence and measurement – are we making progress? scheduled for 6 p.m. April 14.

Immigration and education discussion scheduled for April 5

Penn State’s Center for Education and Civil Rights and Penn State Law’s Center for Immigrants’ Rights will present “Immigration in a New Administration: What Educators Need to Know,” at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at Panorama Village Building (Room A) in State College. Speakers will provide an “Immigration 101 for Educators” description of the recent executive orders on immigration, and also draw connections between immigration enforcement and schools. The program will focus on educators’ rights and responsibilities regarding immigration, existing federal guidance for children from immigrant families, and offer ideas for communicating with families affected by these policies and achieving a safe learning environment for all children. Current and future educators, counselors and administrators from area school districts and charter schools are encouraged to attend. Humphrey Fellows to host poster sessions

The 2016-17 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows will present their capstone projects at a poster session from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in 102 Chambers Building.

Nominations sought for LGBTQA pride award

Nominations for the Susan R. Rankin Pride Award are being accepted through Sunday, April 2. The award, named for Susan R. Rankin, retired associate professor of education policy studies, recognizes a student leader, adviser, faculty or staff member who has demonstrated leadership, integrity and outstanding contributions to the Penn State LGBTQA community. AERA group to provide virtual mentoring

The American Educational Research Association's Critical Examinations of Race, Ethnicity, Class and Gender in Education Special Interest Group is sponsoring a 14-day virtual summit on mentoring. Individuals who sign up will receive one interview per day for 14 days, starting April 5. Each interview will feature an emerging or established scholar who will share insider tips on initiating and maintaining the mentor/mentee relationship. Participants also will gain entry to the Critical Examinations of Race, Ethnicity, Class, and Gender SIG's Working Breakfast at AERA, which will take place from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m. Sunday, April 30. Student Sustainability Council accepting 2017-18 membership applications

The Penn State Student Sustainability Advisory Council is selecting student members for the 2017-18 academic year. The council comprises students with experience and interest in studying, advancing and promoting sustainability and who are committed to helping to advance Penn State’s strategic goals for sustainability. Student members provide consultation and advice on Penn State sustainability planning, programs and initiatives throughout the academic year.

Volunteer judges needed for Undergraduate Exhibition on April 5

Faculty, doctoral student and post-doc volunteers are needed to serve as poster judges for the Undergraduate Exhibition on April 5. Judges play a vital role in the success of this event, which this year includes 230 posters and more than 270 student presenters. Volunteers are being sought in six broad areas of poster entry: arts and humanities; engineering; health and life sciences; physical sciences; social and behavioral sciences; and course-based projects (all disciplines). Those willing to serve as judges should complete and submit the online judge volunteer form. Michigan State University seeks paper proposals

The Michigan State University College of Education is seeking paper submissions for its conference on “Addressing inequalities, mobility and dislocation: Insights from international and domestic research and practice,” scheduled for June 12-13. The deadline to submit a paper is 5 p.m. April 1. This conference will bring together researchers and practitioners working across a variety of disciplinary and professional perspectives to explore how to work toward educational contexts that can help individuals, families and communities thrive in the midst of inequity due to mobility, displacement and other changes to education on local, national and transnational scales.  Public workshop on financial literacy for women offered April 13

A public workshop on financial literacy for women, sponsored by AAUW State College and the Penn State Literacy Center, will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 13, in 119 Outreach Building, Innovation Park, University Park campus. The workshop is open to the public but registration is required. This interactive session is for all women seeking the ability to use skills and knowledge in financial literacy to manage financial resources effectively for financial freedom and security. Rock Ethics Institute to hold lecture

Penn State's Rock Ethics Institute will host the Annual Richard B. Lippin Lecture from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center. Carolyn Hildebrandt, professor of psychology at the University of Northern Iowa, will present "Moral Development in the Context of Group Games" and discuss the comparative benefits of cooperative and competitive games, and the importance of allowing children to create and regulate their own games within democratic, constructivist classrooms.
