Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence announces free course, workshop

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will present the following free course and workshop this spring and summer:

Course Design Academy 2017

Do you have a new course to design? Have you wanted to redesign a course you’ve been teaching for a while? Consider applying to be a participant in the Course Design Academy (CDA) at the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence.

Spend five days over the summer designing your course in the company of other faculty from across the University. As a participant in this highly interactive faculty learning community, you’ll apply principles of learning and assessment, as well as the latest research on teaching, to your specific course. Inspired by the CDA, previous participants have collaborated on grant projects, presented at teaching conferences, and given invited talks on teaching topics.

There are a limited number of spaces available.

To apply online, visit http://bit.ly/2m3wgmy.

The application deadline is Friday, March 31.

Applicants must be available the following dates:

  • May 9-12 for face-to-face meetings at University Park (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • June 20 for a course presentation meeting at University Park (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
Self-Directed Learning

The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will also offer a workshop titled “Self-Directed Learning” from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4, via Zoom Meeting (ID: 355309990). The workshop will be repeated from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5.

What is self-directed learning and how do we help students honestly evaluate their performance and become better learners? Students must learn to address all the aspects of the work they are asked to do, and evaluate and self-monitor their progress. In this workshop we will discuss strategies that will help students develop better metacognitive skills.
