Nomination deadlines looming for New Kensington campus awards

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — The deadline for nominations for Penn State New Kensington’s Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award is Wednesday, March 22. The deadlines for Student Life awards — Penn State Spirit, Emerging Leader, Community Service and Who’s Who — is Friday, March 24.

The Walker Award is presented to the student whose outstanding qualities of character, scholarship and leadership contribute to the prestige of the campus. The award was established in 1980 by Penn State President Eric Walker and is presented at each of the 24 Penn State campuses. Danielle Richardson, a communications major, was the last recipient. Richardson is completing her bachelor’s degree studies and will graduate in May.

“This very special University-wide award is the highest honor that a student can receive in recognition of their contributions to the University and their academic achievements,” said Theresa Bonk, director of student affairs.

The Penn State Spirit Award is presented by the Penn State New Kensington Alumni Society to the campus student who exhibits integrity and character as a leader, demonstrates outstanding dedication to the campus, and exemplifies the meaning of Penn State pride. Richardson also earned the spirit accolade a year ago.

The Emerging Leader recognizes a student’s leadership impact on a student organization through dedication to community service, promotion of diversity, responsible citizenship, and academic excellence. Tyler John, who is secretary of the Student Government Association, is the reigning recipient.

Who’s Who Among Students In American Junior Colleges and American Universities is presented to outstanding campus leaders for scholastic, co-curricular and community accomplishments. Twenty students were honored in 2016.

The Community Service award will be bestowed for the first time. The award recognizes a student who demonstrates the highest commitment to learning through community service in the campus service area, which includes parts of five counties — Allegheny, Armstrong, Butler, Indiana and Westmoreland.

Nominators can be students, faculty, staff or administrators. Nomination forms are available in the Office of Student Affairs, Room 112 in the Administration Building. The form, accompanied by a letter of support, must be returned to Student Affairs by Wednesday, March 22.
