Talk on student mental health will kick off "Research Unplugged"

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. --  "Research Unplugged," a series of talks by Penn State faculty and staff who share their expertise on science, technology and culture with the community, will start March 16 with "College Student Mental Health Trends: Responding to a New Reality" by Ben Locke, senior director of the University's Counseling and Psychological Services.

The talks, free and open to the public, will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the library's Downsbrough Community Room. They are being presented in collaboration with the Penn State Office of Government and Community Relations and Schlow Centre Region Library.

Locke's talk will kick off this spring's series with a look at the changing trends and implications of mental health in the modern age. The series will continue with:

  • "Antibiotic Resistant Microbes: Threat to American Lives and Global Economy" by Andrew Read, Evan Pugh Professor of Biology and Entomology and director of Penn State's Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics, March 23;
  • "Debunking Myths of the Brain" by Suzy Scherf, assistant professor of psychology and head of the Laboratory of Developmental Neuroscience, March 30;
  • Please note: The following session has been canceled. "Democratic Emotions: From Resentment to Gratitude" by Jeremy Engels, Sherwin Early Career Professor in the College of the Liberal Arts, April 6.
