New Kensington campus welcomes new nurse

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — Stamatia “Stella” Milburn, the new campus nurse at Penn State New Kensington, is eager to work with students again.

Milburn, a registered nurse for 24 years, served as a health coach for the past five years for Highmark Health System. Before that, she worked in the student health center for nine years at the University of Pittsburgh.

“I really missed the face-to-face interaction with the students and their diversity,” Milburn said. “I am excited to assist Penn State New Kensington students in any way that I can, regarding health conditions, mental health issues, and education and prevention. I want to ensure their years at the campus go as smooth as possible.”

Milburn replaced Elaine Zarichnak, who retired in January. The North Huntingdon resident received her registered nurse certificate at the Community College of Allegheny County-South and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

As the head of the campus’ Health Services office, Milburn's charge is dual — treating minor illnesses and injuries, and educating the campus community. She provides first aid and counseling services, including working with students with disabilities, and designs programs to improve the health of the campus.

“I work with students and faculty regarding minor injuries, acute and chronic health conditions, mental health issues and concerns, as well as education and prevention,” Milburn said. “I also assist our students with any disabilities they may have to ensure they are accommodated, so they can complete their education with fewer difficulties.”

Programs promoting health awareness, positive health behaviors, and disease prevention permeate the fall and spring semesters. One-on-one counseling also is available to students seeking assistance with health concerns, such as smoking, alcohol and other drug abuses, nutrition and weight management, and human sexuality issues.

Located in the Athletics Center, the Health Services clinic is open to all students registered for the current semester. Faculty and staff are eligible for emergency care and screenings.
