Parking, traffic and transit adjustments for THON 2017

The 2017 Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON) will be held at the Bryce Jordan Center from 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, through 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19.

To accommodate the required access for THON, a number of parking, traffic and transit adjustments will be in effect this weekend.

RESERVED PARKING LOTS

The following parking lots will be reserved this weekend in support of THON:

-    Lot Orange L South (fenced lot south of Bryce Jordan Center) will be reserved for THON from Thursday, Feb. 16, through 7:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20. The lot will be used for technical and support vehicles in addition to volunteers that will be moving large amounts of material and supplies in and out of the Bryce Jordan Center. Faculty and staff that normally park at Lot Orange L South are asked to use Lot Orange L East, Lot Orange B (Softball) or one of the commuter lots on Friday, Feb. 17.

-    Lot Orange L East (also known as the Founders Lot, located on the east side of the Bryce Jordan Center) and a nearby section of Lot 44 will be reserved from 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, through the conclusion of THON for Four Diamonds Fund families. Faculty and staff that normally park at Lot Orange L East on Friday evening (after 5 p.m.), Saturday or Sunday should use one of the remaining Commuter parking areas from 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, through 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19.

-    Lot Yellow V (located west of the Bryce Jordan Center) will be reserved for authorized permit holders only from 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, through 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb 19.

-    The south section of Lot 44 (located south of Dauer Drive) will be reserved from 5 p.m. Friday through the conclusion of THON.

VISITOR PARKING

General visitor parking for THON will be available at Stadium West, Lot 44 and Porter North from Friday, Feb. 17, through Sunday, Feb. 19.

It is expected that all parking areas near the Bryce Jordan Center will reach capacity at various times this weekend. It is paramount that all vehicles be parked within all lines of a legal space to allow maximum access. Due to heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic, motorists are urged to use caution when traveling in the vicinity of the Bryce Jordan Center from Friday, Feb. 17, through Sunday, Feb. 19.

TRAFFIC ADVISORIES

Beginning at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, spectators will stage in the Porter North parking area, and will then be directed across Porter Road, traveling on the sidewalk on the south side of Curtin Road to reach the Bryce Jordan Center. As a result, Curtin Road between University Drive and Porter Road will be restricted to transit buses only from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday. During this crossing, University Police and THON committee members will be assisting with this crossing to ensure pedestrian safety. Motorists are asked to avoid the section of Curtin Road between University Drive and Porter Road.

The Dancers Walk will take place on Friday, Feb. 17, from 4 to 5 p.m. The walk will begin at the Multi-Sport Facility and proceed north along the drive lane on the west side of Lot 44 to the Bryce Jordan Center. During this time, the drive lane along the west side of Lot 44 will be closed from the Multi-Sport Facility to Lot Orange L East (Founders Lot). Dauer Drive (located south of the Bryce Jordan Center) will also be closed from Porter Road to University Drive.

During the Dancers Walk, all vehicles exiting Lot 44 will be directed east to exit on to Porter Road. Vehicles parked at Lot Orange L East will be allowed to exit via the north lot entrance/exit only, and will then be required to proceed north to Curtin Road or east to Porter Road. No traffic will be allowed to exit Lot 44 via Dauer Drive (Located south of the Bryce Jordan Center). All access to Lot 44 will be from Curtin Road or Porter Road only.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, Curtin Road will be closed to all traffic except CATA buses from University Drive to Porter Road.

TRANSIT CHANGES

From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, CATA's Red Link campus bus service will be rerouted to avoid the interior of Lot 44. Red Link buses traveling eastbound to Innovation Park will stay on Curtin Road to Porter Road, turning left on Porter and resuming the normal route to Innovation Park. The Red Link westbound will follow the normal routing to Porter Road, where it will turn right on Curtin Road and resume normal routing on to campus. The Porter Road stop east of Lot 44 will not be used from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday.

Thanks to sponsorship from the Retreat, both the Blue and White Loop will continue to operate early Saturday and Sunday mornings when service normally does not operate (2:30-9 a.m. on the Blue Loop and 4-9 a.m. on the White Loop). The additional service means the Loop service will operate continuously for the 48 hour period between 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, and 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at the scheduled frequency shown in the special THON Loop schedule.
