'Computational Methods in Stormwater Management' offered at Wilkes-Barre

Short course for professionals to be held April 26-28

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors in partnership with Penn State Wilkes-Barre Continuing Education will be offering 'Computational Methods in Stormwater Management,' a three-day short course for Stormwater Management Design professionals at The Penn Stater Conference Center in State College. The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, through Friday, April 28.

The topics presented in this short course represent a comprehensive array of hydrologic and hydraulic tools for stormwater management design, detention facility design, best management practice (BMP) design, and subdivision planning. The Virginia Tech/Penn State Urban Hydrology Model (VT/PSUHM) version 8.3 will be used to illustrate how these tools can assist in the design of stormwater management facilities. Special emphasis will be placed on the fundamental calculations for detention facility design, particularly outlet structure design.

This course is intended for stormwater facility designers with previous exposure to urban runoff calculations involving NRCS (SCS) methods, channel and reservoir routing principles, and rational methodologies. Because hands-on computer work is emphasized in the course, the fundamental concepts behind these methods will not be presented in great detail. However, specific details for each of the methods presented will be documented or referenced in the supplemental short-course notes.

Each participant is encouraged to bring a hand calculator for occasional use and must bring a Microsoft Windows-based laptop computer to the course. Each attendee will receive course handout materials that include a set of notes documenting standard stormwater computational methods; speaker presentation notes; and a copy of the VT/PSUHM version 8.3 program.  Visit our website for additional details about the computer requirements.
