New Faculty Academy for Engaged Scholarship seeks proposals

Open to all Penn State faculty, program to deepen University-wide discourse, practice and recognition of engaged scholarship

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Student Engagement Network is announcing a call for proposals for the first cohort of the Faculty Academy for Engaged Scholarship. The academy will support faculty who wish to spend a portion of their time during the academic year developing research, scholarship, creative accomplishment, and/or programming (courses or curriculum) involving engaged scholarship.

The Faculty Academy will advance knowledge about engaged scholarship across the University and strengthen engaged scholarship courses and experiences at Penn State,” said Jacqueline Edmondson, associate vice president and associate dean for Undergraduate Education. “Through the Faculty Fellows and Faculty Scholars, we will cultivate faculty leadership and recognize and enable the contributions of engaged scholarship faculty. Our Faculty Advisory Committee has had great input on the development of the Academy, and we are thrilled to make these opportunities available in the year ahead.”

The program, which will annually accept proposals, welcomes both faculty scholars and faculty fellows. This year, one faculty scholar will be awarded a two-year appointment to focus on research and public scholarship. Five faculty fellows will be selected to serve a one-year appointment to focus on developing models of engagement in courses and field work. Project budgets will be made available to successful applicants. More information can be found here.

Selection will be based on: the quality and relevance of past engaged scholarship activities; a desire to deepen the campus-wide discourse, practice and recognition of engaged scholarship; the quality of the proposal for future engaged scholarship activities; the capacity to disseminate information about the project to the broader campus community; and the ability to act as a campus leader in this area.

The Student Engagement Network is the evolution of Penn State’s Engaged Scholarship Council, a group that consisted of faculty, staff and students from across the University to advance engaged teaching, research and service at Penn State. In its current form, the network will work to enhance curricular and co-curricular opportunities for Penn State undergraduate students through student engagement, engaged scholarship, and community partnerships.

The proposal deadline for the academy is Feb. 17.

A detailed description of the program and application process can be found in Penn State Box here.
