Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence offers three workshops in January

'Students in Distress,' 'Handling Challenging Situations in the Classroom,' and 'Building Connections: A Workshop for International Faculty, Grad Students, and Postdocs'

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will present the following free workshops:

"Students in Distress"

Noon-1:00 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, via Zoom Meeting ID: 355309990. The workshop will be repeated at 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 24.

Quite often, faculty and staff encounter student behaviors that are concerning, and questions arise regarding the most effective manner to respond. In these sessions, facilitated by Brett Scofield and Andrea Falzone of the Office of Counseling and Psychological Services, the resources that are available when faculty and staff become aware of student concerns will be reviewed. Additionally, basic helping skills will be described that faculty and staff can utilize when students become disruptive, demonstrate signs of increased distress, or disclose the presence of significant mental health issues.

Be advised: you will be asked to download an application to access the meeting. If you do not have the software installed before trying to join or start a meeting on the Zoom website, the site will prompt you to download the software.  You do not need an admin account to install this program on your computer.

When entering the Zoom meeting room please use your full name or Penn State user id so we can make sure you get credit for attending.

"Handling Challenging Situations in the Classroom"

Noon-1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, in 315 Rider Building, University Park

It’s not a question of "if" but rather of "when" — challenging situations happen to all teachers, whether that means chronically late students; distracting use of mobile devices; hostile students; or some other behavior. In this workshop, facilitated by our Graduate Consultants David Favre and Moji Shahvali, we’ll discuss ways to deal with such situations without becoming part of the disruption. "Handling Challenging Situations in the Classroom" is directed to graduate students but any member of the Penn State community may attend.

This workshop satisfies a requirement for the Instructional Foundations Series for new instructors.

"Building Connections: A Workshop for International Faculty, Grad Students, and Postdocs"

Noon-1:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 373 Willard Building, University Park

This interactive workshop, presented by Research Associate Chas Brua, Graduate Consultant Moji Shahvali, and Meredith Doran will focus on cultural expectations in U.S. classrooms, especially as related to strategies for creating rapport between instructor and students. We'll explore the importance of first-day introductions, as well as effective ways to establish credibility, authority, and approachability. The workshop will be led by facilitators from Penn State's English for Professional Purposes Intercultural Center and from the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence. "Building Connections: A Workshop for International Faculty, Grad Students, and Postdocs" is directed to international faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral students but any member of the Penn State community may attend.
