UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The John M. Anderson Endowed Lecture Series sponsors an outstanding program of visiting artists and scholars who lecture, give master classes and workshops, and critique student work throughout the academic year. Beginning in March, the spring 2017 schedule will feature public lectures by four exceptional artists: Dahn Hiuni, Sharon Louden, Mike Andrews and Erik Parker.
Kicking off our spring season is Dahn Hiuni, a New York-based Israeli-American multidisciplinary artist and activist. His creative work spans visual art, performance art, theatre, and graphic design. Hiuni will give a lecture titled “Do It All! In Favor of the Generalist in a Specialist’s Art World” at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14.
Sharon Louden is an artist, senior critic at the New York Academy of Art, and editor of "Living and Sustaining a Creative Life: Essays by 40 Working Artists." Published in October 2013, the book is now in its sixth printing. Louden and Graeme Sullivan, director of the Penn State School of Visual Arts, will discuss "The Artist as Culture Producer: Living and Sustaining a Creative Life," the second book in Louden’s series, at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15.
Mike Andrews’ tapestries, sculptures and animations taunt the categorizations of textile, object and cinema. His hybrid approach to making is fueled by the desires and anxieties of a schizophrenic and body-conscious culture. Andrews will give a lecture titled “The Surgeon, the Flirt, and that Thing” at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21.
Ending the spring season is artist Erik Parker. New York-based Parker employs his wildly inventive architecture and signature neon palate to create bold, graphic compositions that riff on the traditional genres of portraiture and still-life. Parker will give a lecture titled “Neon Visionary” at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5.

The Penn State School of Visual Arts John M. Anderson Endowed Lecture Series was established in 2001 through the generous support of John M. Anderson, Penn State professor emeritus. The result of Anderson’s love of the philosophy of art and painting, his endowment contributes to the creative and intellectual life of the campus. Anderson, an Evan Pugh Research Professor of Philosophy, was a longtime faculty member and three-time department head in the Department of Philosophy and the first director of Penn State’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities.
