Global Engagement Leadership Experience set for Feb. 24-26

Deadline to apply is Jan. 27

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Presented by Penn State Global Programs, the Global Engagement Leadership Experience (GELE) is a two-and-a-half day conference that brings together international and U.S. students to discuss and learn about aspects of global leadership.

The spring 2017 retreat, scheduled for Feb. 24 to 26, will offer a mix of serious conversations, engaging activities, and practical simulations to help students talk about cultures and think about leadership through a variety of global perspectives. Students will be provided with the space and tools to have honest, meaningful dialogue moderated by University staff, allowing students to forge bonds while preparing them to have a positive impact on the cultural climate both at Penn State and abroad.

“After GELE, I felt an immediate change in my disposition toward those of other origins and backgrounds, mainly international students,” said one GELE participant. “I feel a new profound respect for individuals of different cultures.”

Students are currently being sought for the spring 2017 retreat, and the deadline to apply is Jan. 27. The application process is competitive, with 40 students to be selected for the experience. Program participants include both international and U.S. students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, races, ethnicities and more.

“GELE was one of the best weekends of my almost four year Penn State career,” commented a past participant. “It was unlike anything I’ve ever done and the conversations and friendships I’ve gained from the experience will stay with me long after I graduate.”
