Land-use webinar to focus on intergenerational spaces and places

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Creating public places that are conducive to intergenerational engagement and cooperation and how planners can develop these places will be the topic of a web-based seminar offered by Penn State Extension.

Presenting the 75-minute webinar from noon to 1:15 p.m. on Jan. 18 will be Matt Kaplan, professor of intergenerational programs and aging in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences.

"Intergenerational Spaces and Places for Building Meaningful Relationships" is the first webinar in Penn State Extension's winter/spring Land Use Webinar Series that runs from January to May 2017. The series assists municipal elected and appointed officials, planners, landowners, farmers and community organizations to be informed about land-use issues and decisions in their communities.

"Community settings such as parks, playgrounds, shopping malls, community centers and purpose-built age-integrated centers — where the generations can readily meet, interact and build relationships — can have a major bearing on community quality of life," said Kaplan.

His presentation will provide examples of creative programs, planned environments (including images and objects found in these environments) and design strategies that are responsive to intergenerational engagement goals in diverse settings. Kaplan will frame these examples in the context of intergenerational contact zones, which is both a conceptual tool for examining complex, multi-generational settings and a design tool for generating innovative ideas for developing intergenerational meeting spaces that may be converted into socially meaningful places.

All webinars will be offered from noon to 1:15 p.m. Eastern Time and will be recorded and available for future viewing.

The cost of the webinar series is $40 for all five and $75 for all five for those who want to receive certification maintenance credits from the American Planning Association or for professional engineers needing PDH credits. In addition, registered landscape architects can receive continuing education credits for a fee of $45.
