Engineering Design Showcase honors students for creative problem-solving

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The fall 2016 College of Engineering Design Showcase winners were announced Thursday, Dec. 8, immediately following the event at the Bryce Jordan Center.

The showcase, which included 69 senior capstone design projects, was the culmination of a semester-long effort by students to solve real-world challenges posed by industry sponsors and other clients.

Two projects came in first place for the Lockheed Martin Design Award for best project: “Meteorology Sensors for Unmanned Aircraft,” for Penn State’s Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering by Reem Ali, Sean Egan, Phillip Szymanowski, Douglas Turner and Tyler Whitaker, advised by Timothy Wheeler, assistant professor of electrical engineering; and “Pump Station Simulation & Optimization” for Siemens Energy Inc. by Nasser Aljadeed, Alex Beane, Timothy Deley, Collin Forsyth, Kyle Hardy, Siwei Liu, Michael Meehan, Kenneth Rink, Scott Tress and Ruoxi Yu, advised by Mike Erdman, Walter L. Robb Director of Engineering Leadership Development, and Timothy Wheeler.

Second place for best project went to “Engine Test Cell Air Induction Plenum Analysis & Redesign” for Lycoming Engines by Abdulla Alzaabi, David Hontz, George Mishkin, Brian Moore and Matthew Prevost, advised by Tak Sing Wong, Wormley Family Early Career Professor in Engineering and assistant professor of mechanical engineering; and “Closing Tooling Re-Design” for Philips Ultrasound by Michael Ciesielski, Mimi Corsetti, Patrick Costello and Dakotah McCalmon, advised by Paris von Lockette, associate professor of mechanical engineering.

Third place best project award recipients were: “Stephens Freedom Trike” for Adventures in Training with a Purpose by Alaiban Abdulrahman, Timothy Bell and Michael Martenas, advised by Jessica Menold, doctoral candidate in mechanical engineering; and “The Internet of Things and Crisis Management” for PTC Inc. by Sangsun Kim, Andrew Lee, Thomas Liptack, Shaurya Rastogi, Berty Ruan, Yi-Shun Wang, and Glyn Wei, advised by Alan Verbanec, instructor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Three teams received best poster awards. First place went to “Meteorology Sensors for Unmanned Aircraft”; second place was awarded to “Small Engine Dynamometer” for Penn State’s Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering by Lucy Blevins, Christian Eckenrode, Ross Lynam, Seth Ryberg and Tyler Snyder, advised by Gary Neal, instructor in mechanical engineering; and third place went to “Internet of Things Enabled Legacy Machines” for Penn State’s Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering by Kayla Hussar, Ismeo Jean Louis, Margret Logan, Jorge Ayllon Ramirez, and Bryan Ryder, advised by Michael Immel, instructor in the Marcus department.

The BP People’s Choice Award went to “3D Printing an Automotive Seating Pad” for Ford Motor Company by Omar Alali, Anthony Benjamin, Jack Boudreau and Nur Alia Noh, advised by Wallace Catanach, instructor in Penn State’s School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs.

Charles Cruikshank from Philips Ultrasound received the Best Sponsor Award.
