Gov. Wolf appoints two new trustees to Penn State board

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf has appointed two new members to the Penn State Board of Trustees. Among Penn State's 38-member board, six trustees are appointed by the governor.

The two newly appointed members are David Kleppinger, chairman of the law firm McNees Wallace & Nurick in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Alex Hartzler, managing partner and founder of real estate development company WCI Partners in Harrisburg.

Kleppinger received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Penn State in 1977 and holds a law degree from Temple University. At McNees Wallace & Nurick, he represents large commercial and industrial consumers of fixed utility services, including electricity, natural gas, water/wastewater and communications, as well as providers of these services.

Hartzler received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Penn State in 1990 and holds a law degree from George Washington University. He also chairs the board of retailer Ten Thousand Villages and is the publisher of TheBurg, a monthly community newspaper in Harrisburg.

Kleppinger and Hartzler will replace outgoing trustees Cliff Benson and Paul Silvis, whose terms have expired. Kleppinger and Hartzler, whose terms will be in effect until July 1, 2019, and until any successors are appointed and qualified. The two will join governor-appointed trustees Robert Capretto, Mark Dambly, Allison Goldstein and Elliott Weinstein on the Penn State board.

Other members of the Board of Trustees include five trustees who serve in an ex officio capacity by virtue of their position within the University or the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. They are the president of the University (non-voting); the governor of the Commonwealth (non-voting); and the state secretaries of the departments of Agriculture; Education; and Conservation and Natural Resources. Also part of the 38 are nine trustees elected by alumni; six elected by organized agricultural societies within the Commonwealth; six elected by the Board of Trustees representing business and industry endeavors; three at-large trustees; one student trustee, one academic trustee, the past president of the Penn State Alumni Association.
