Beta Gamma Sigma invites top Penn State Smeal students to join

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Beta Gamma Sigma, the international honor society that recognizes business excellence, has mailed invitations to high-achieving upperclassmen in the Penn State Smeal College of Business.

Qualifying junior and seniors should be checking their mailboxes.

“The first thing that drew me to Beta Gamma Sigma was how prestigious it was,” said senior finance major MaryKate MacDonald, the appointed vice president of the Penn State chapter.

“It is the most respected international business honor society. Also, not everyone receives invitations to join, so it felt good to be recognized for my hard work.”

The Epsilon Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma at Smeal was established in 1957. Only the top 10 percent of the senior class and the top seven percent of the junior class are eligible for an invitation to join. Department chairs and parents are informed of the student’s accomplishment.

Charles H. Whiteman, the John and Becky Surma Dean of Smeal, is the vice chairman of Beta Gamma Sigma.

The benefits to joining Beta Gamma Sigma include lifelong recognition and membership in an international organization of business professionals, a career resource center, an active alumni network and a scholarship program.

“Since being a member, I have really been able to be successful in my career search," MacDonald said. "Recruiters realize that members of Beta Gamma Sigma are leaders who have strong work ethics. Additionally, members receive access to test prep and scholarships; the career resources are irreplaceable.

“For students who are uncertain of joining, I would tell them that being a member of Beta Gamma Sigma is a great honor. After a one-time payment, you receive access to a variety of resources geared toward education and career services. Once someone becomes a member they receive lifetime recognition and access to a community of successful peers.”

Invitees can learn more about the organization and submit their application at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, in Room 217 Business Building. Free pizza will be served. The application deadline is Nov. 30.
