Mini-conference encourages students to 'Go Freelance!'

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A mini-conference focusing on the how-tos and opportunities related to freelancing open to all Penn State students will be conducted from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, in Carnegie Building.

Go Freelance! is designed to inform and equip students with resources and knowledge related to potential self-employment opportunities. Topics for the 18 sessions scheduled during the day include brand management, copyright, legal issues, magazine writing, pitching a story, sports journalism, the video-game industry and more. A complete schedule can be found online at comm.psu.edu/gofreelance.

A keynote lecture by photographer George Steinmetz opens the event. Steinmetz’ professional resume includes three books, more than 40 major photo essays for National Geographic, and 25 stories for GEO magazine in Germany since 1986.

Faculty members from the College of Communications and the University’s intercollege minor in entrepreneurship and innovation, as well as regional communications and freelancing pros, will conduct a series of sessions during the day — which is part of Penn State’s overall efforts related to Global Entrepreneurship Week.
