Summer Academy for the Blind seeks summer workers

The Summer Academy for the Blind and Visually Impaired is accepting applications for its 2017 program. A four-week program that introduces high school students who are blind or visually impaired to college life, the academy hires resident assistants to live and attend classes with program participants and to serve as mentors. Graduate school seeks nominations for student, faculty awards

The Graduate School at Penn State is accepting nominations for 12 graduate student and three faculty recognition awards for the 2016-17 academic year. The awards acknowledge the significant contributions that graduate students and faculty members make to the teaching, research and outreach missions of the University.

Award applications and nominations must be submitted to the Graduate School by Tuesday, Nov. 1; however, individual colleges may have earlier deadlines. For more information about the awards and the nomination process, visit http://bit.ly/2e7pFb1.

CSATS offers free workshop for early-career professionals

Penn State’s CarbonEARTH GK-12 program, an initiative of the Center for Science and the Schools (CSATS), will host a workshop-style conference for graduate students, post-docs and early career faculty Oct. 28-29 at the Ramada Inn in State College. The workshop will feature the following sessions:

  • Writing competitive grant proposals
  • Incorporating student-centered practices into undergraduate and graduate teaching
  • Communicating your work to the public
  • Developing education plans for early career grants
  • Designing Broader Impacts programs

DCEC launches film, speaker series

The College of Education Diversity and Community Enhancement Committee (DCEC) is sponsoring “Uprooted and Re-rooted: Stories of Loss, Resilience and Social Change,” a film/speaker series that will highlight loss, struggle and transformation of young people in diverse cultural contexts.

First in the series is a screening and discussion of “Vengo Volviendo” (“Here & There”) by Filmarte filmmakers Isabel Rodas & Gabriel, from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, in Foster Auditorium in Paterno Library on the University Park campus.

SPLED to host open house

Penn State’s special education program will host an open house on Friday, Nov. 4, for individuals interested in learning more about the college’s special education doctoral program. The daylong event will introduce prospective students to program faculty and current doctoral students. Attendees also will receive a tour of campus and sit in on a graduate seminar.
