Events today -- HUB and Business Building -- raise awareness of national debt

Smeal undergraduates will discuss the consequences of long-term national debt while at the same time trying to win a national competition

A team of Penn State Smeal College of Business undergraduates will be in the Business Building Atrium from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 19 and the first floor of the HUB-Robeson Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19 to try to raise awareness about the consequences of long-term national debt while at the same time trying to win a national competition.

During "My Two Cents Day," those students will be gathering signatures for a nonpartisan pledge to take a stand for their fiscal futures and ask elected officials and presidential candidates for a plan.

Teams from more than 75 institutions are participating in the 2016-17 UP to US competition, sponsored by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation in partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative University and Net Impact. The competition calls on teams to design thought-provoking campaigns to raise national debt awareness on campus.

A panel of judges will choose the winning team based on the success of key campaign activities and the creativity and vision behind those activities.

The winning team will receive $10,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2017 Clinton Global Initiative University meeting where they will be formally recognized on stage. Team leaders can attend the 2016 Net Impact Conference in November at the Pennsylvania Conference Center in Philadelphia.

A select group of top-performing students will be invited to Washington, D.C. to meet with policy organizations, civic groups, and leaders from across the political spectrum to discuss millennials’ stake in financial issues, and attend the Peter G. Peterson Foundation’s 2017 Fiscal Summit.

Students who choose to take the pledge are asked to tweet about it using #MTCD and/or #UpToUs.

Students can also sign the pledge online.
