READING, Pa. — Días de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, will be celebrated at Penn State Berks at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2. Cesar Martinez-Garza, assistant professor of mathematics at Penn State Berks and a native of Mexico City, will provide a presentation about Días de los Muertos and its cultural and spiritual significance. The event will take place in the Perkins Student Center Multipurpose Room. Mexican-themed refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
Días de los Muertos is a unique event in Mexico, established long before colonization of that country. Traditionally, Días de los Muertos is a two-day celebration of loved ones who have passed that takes place Nov. 1 and 2 of each year. The celebration includes building a family ofrendas, (an altar or offering honoring the deceased), visiting family cemeteries plots, and enjoying favorite foods, music and stories of the deceased.
