Harrisburg engineering technology programs receive ABET reaccreditation

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — The engineering technology programs, Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET), Structural Design and Construction Engineering Technology (SDCET), and Electrical Engineering Technology (EET), in Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Science, Engineering, and Technology have successfully received ABET reaccreditation.

ABET, the national accreditation board for applied science, computing, engineering technology, and engineering programs at colleges and universities, accredits more than 3,100 programs at more than 660 institutions in 24 countries.

“Many engineering technology graduates will take the Fundamentals of Engineering exam as they work through the process of becoming a professional licensed engineer,” said Rafic Bachnak, director of the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology. “In order to take this critical exam, students must have graduated from an ABET accredited program. The programs’ accreditation ensures that current and future graduates will remain competitive in the private and public sector.”

The MET and EET programs were first accredited in 1973 along with the Building Construction Technology program which changed its name to Structural Design and Construction Engineering Technology in 1986.

According to ABET, accreditation is proof that a collegiate program has met standards essential to produce graduates ready to enter the critical fields of applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology. Graduates from an ABET-accredited program have a solid educational foundation and are capable of leading the way in innovation, emerging technologies, and in anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

Other Penn State Harrisburg ABET accredited programs include Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.
