Global Languages Week to spotlight scholarship, fellowship opportunities

Wide range of programming to be offered Sept. 6 to 9

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Students interested in expanding their global identities by delving into a foreign language can take advantage of a wide range of programming opportunities during Global Languages Week, Sept. 6 to 9.

Sponsored by Penn State’s University Fellowships Office (UFO), Global Languages Week will highlight scholarships and fellowships available to students with a passion for foreign language study.

The week kicks off Sept. 6 with an information table situated in the HUB-Robeson Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A global languages fellowships overview will follow from 2 to 3 p.m. in 311 Boucke.

For the duration of the week, these language opportunities will be discussed at events featuring UFO staff, alongside past scholarship and fellowship recipients.

Wednesday, Sept. 7

The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships information session will be held from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Sept. 7 in 306 Boucke. Elena Galinova, the FLAS coordinator, and FLAS fellows will be on hand to answer questions.

Thursday, Sept. 8

The Critical Language Scholarship information session will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Sept. 8 in 106 HUB. Grace Benner and Ben Stewart — who participated in CLS programs in Korea and Russia, respectively — will share personal experiences and offer advice to prospective scholars.

Friday, Sept. 9

Students interested in applying to the Gilman or Boren scholarships can attend an information session from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in 410 Boucke hosted by Tia Langnes and Scott Runner of the University Office of Global Programs.

Drop-in sessions throughout the week

The UFO will also host drop-in sessions for students as part of Global Languages Week. They will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in 310 Boucke; from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 8 in 310 Boucke; and from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 9 in 212 Boucke.
