UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A suspicious package found today (Aug. 30) on the fifth floor of the Student Health Center on the University Park campus was determined to be a non-threat by the Penn State-State College hazardous device team, which responded to the incident. A staff member reported the package to University Police at 9:10 a.m.

Members of the hazardous device team analyzed the package and issued an all-clear at 10:45 a.m. after it was determined that the package posed no danger. The package drew concerns after it was received unexpectedly from overseas with excessive packing tape and no return address.

As a precaution, the fifth floor of the Student Health Center was temporarily evacuated while authorities investigated. Due to the package’s small size and light weight, bomb squad personnel determined that only an evacuation of the fifth floor was necessary, although staff members throughout the building were notified of the suspicious package and allowed to evacuate at their discretion.

All evacuated staff members have since been permitted to return to their offices. Police encourage everyone in the University community to report any suspicious behaviors or items by calling 911 or University Police at 814-863-1111.
