UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Woskob Family Gallery will present "Deal With It," an exhibition of work by emerging contemporary artists curated by Maake Magazine editor and Penn State master of fine arts candidate Emily Burns, from Aug. 22 to Oct. 19. The exhibition will kick off the semester at the recently revamped contemporary art space in downtown State College and highlight exciting work that invites an engaged and active visual inquiry.

“These works exemplify activated surfaces through a broad range of textures, colors, a diverse collection of unconventional materials and experimental methods, and a plethora of subtleties invariably lost in digital reproductions,” said Burns, who earned her bachelor of fine arts from Penn State's School of Visual Arts in 2008.

Including artists from all over the United States, the exhibition seeks to illuminate the dialogue between these works and encourage and amplify in-person interactions and investigations with tactile objects forfeited from the print and digital landscape.

Maake Magazine is an artist-run online gallery and quarterly print magazine showcasing experimental and innovative work by emerging artists. Its goal is to exhibit innovative and experimental contemporary artwork and foster conversation and community.

“As the art world becomes more diverse, we hope to support the expansion and reinvention of traditional disciplines of art and making, where media and methods converge and cross boundaries to create unique combinations,” Burns explained on the magazine’s website. “We explore the place where fiber, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, painting, digital, design, and more come together to create exciting and groundbreaking work. We also actively promote the work of featured artists via social media, printed issues of our magazine, and on the blog.”

Stop by during State College’s First Friday programming from 5-9 p.m. Sept. 2. The event will offer a creative drawing experience for all ages with Burns, as well as live music by Daniel Collins and Nate Cutshall from 6-8:30 p.m.

The opening reception for "Deal With It" will be held from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Woskob Family Gallery, located at 146 South Allen Street in State College.
