Tree removal at Nittany Lion Inn scheduled for Aug. 24

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The south entrance drive to the Nittany Lion Inn will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 24 while a tree is removed.

The Office of Physical Plant will be removing the American Elm, which is believed to have elm yellows disease.

Elm yellows, also known as elm phloem necrosis, is specific to North American elms and is caused by a bacteria-like organism that infects the root cells and the phloem — the inner bark that carries nutrients to all parts of the tree. The disease essentially prevents the tree from receiving adequate nourishment.

There is no known cure for elm yellows and trees usually die within a year or two after being infected. Elm yellows is spread by the elm leafhopper.
