Map and GIS information sessions scheduled for fall 2016

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Two fall 2016 Penn State University Libraries informational sessions offering introductions to map and GIS topics are planned for Penn State students, faculty, staff and visitors in the Donald W. Hamer Maps Library, ground floor Pattee Library, University Park, and via Adobe Connect online. No registration is required.

Sessions are held in the Hamer Maps Library's instructional room, located across from the entrance to the collection, services and reference area:

Wednesday, Sept. 14: Getting to know Maps: Map Literacy, 3:30-5 p.m., Donald W. Hamer Maps Library, W13 Pattee Library, University Park and on Adobe Connect.

This session will provide participants with an overview of printed maps, digital scanned maps and interactive web maps, plus skills used for reading and interpreting maps, and will present the different types of maps visitors may encounter. Participants will learn about map resources of the University Libraries and various map sources, which may be useful in teaching, research and personal use.

Wednesday, Oct. 12: Getting to Know GIS: GIS Literacy, 3:30-5 p.m., Donald W. Hamer Maps Library, W13 Pattee Library, University Park and on Adobe Connect.

This session will introduce participants to geographic information systems (GIS) concepts that form the foundation of working with spatial data. GIS topics will be discussed without reference to a specific software package. Participants will gain a greater understanding of GIS concepts, introductory concepts to different data models, manipulation and analysis techniques.
