Free events greet new graduate students, welcome back returning students

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- As the fall semester begins, events at various Penn State locations are greeting new graduate students and welcoming back returning students over the next few weeks.

Events include:

  • Penn State Law Class of 2019 Barbecue (1 p.m., Aug. 16, Katz Building grounds, University Park campus).
  • Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences Coffee Hour (2 p.m., Aug. 16, Life Sciences Bridge, third floor, University Park campus): The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences is hosting a free coffee hour for Huck students.
  • College of Nursing Doctoral Student/Faculty Dinner (5:30 p.m., Aug. 16, Millbrook Marsh Nature Center, 548 Puddintown Rd., State College, Pennsylvania): Nursing Dean Paula Milone-Nuzzo and Associate Dean Judith Hupcey will host the college's annual event for doctoral students and nursing faculty.
  • University Park Campus Tours (10 a.m., Aug. 17, Kern Graduate Building, University Park campus): Current graduate students are offering a one-hour tour of campus for new graduate students. The tour will begin at the main entrance of the Kern Graduate Building and conclude at the HUB-Robeson Center.   • New Graduate Student Orientation (1 p.m., Aug. 17, Bryce Jordan Center, University Park campus): The Graduate School is sponsoring a half-day orientation for all new graduate students, including new international students.   • Department of Biology Pizza Party (Noon, Aug. 17, Frear Building North lawn, University Park campus): Welcoming incoming biology graduate students.
  • Penn State Harrisburg New International Student Orientation (7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Aug. 18, Gallery Lounge, Olmsted Building, Harrisburg campus): Students will meet with faculty, staff and other graduate students and will receive an overview of Penn State Harrisburg's academic environment.
  • Penn State Great Valley New Graduate Student Orientation (5:30 p.m., Aug. 18, Main Building, Great Valley campus): An evening program that includes a reception for students and faculty, workshops for students to learn about the campus and University and the opportunity for students to meet their faculty advisers.
  • Dickinson Law Movie Night (7 p.m., Aug. 19, Carlisle Theatre, 40 W. High St., Carlisle, Pennsylvania): Law students will have the opportunity to see "To Kill a Mockingbird" and Dickinson Law faculty member Michael Mogill will provide commentary at the end of the film. Free beer tasting courtesy of Carlisle-based Rhone Brewing Company will also be available.
  • School of International Affairs Fall Picnic (4 p.m., Aug. 26, Sunset Park, 850 McKee St., State College, Pennsylvania): Welcoming the school's Class of 2018.
  • College of Medicine Faculty and Student Research Retreat (4 p.m., Aug. 26, Antique Automobile Club of America Museum, 161 Museum Dr., Hummelstown, Pennsylvania): The College of Medicine is hosting its third annual retreat for medical students and faculty members to share their research interests, results and expertise.
  • Penn State Great Valley Pizza Party (TBD, Aug. 30 and 31, Main Building, Great Valley campus): Penn State Great Valley will host a pizza party before the start of evening classes.
  • Agricultural Sciences New Graduate Student Orientation (3 p.m., Sept. 7, 118 Agricultural Sciences and Industries Building, University Park campus): The College of Agricultural Sciences' orientation will focus on research, funding, income tax assistance, international programs, intellectual property and diversity and multicultural programs. The event will also feature an ice cream social in the ASI Building lobby.
  • "Overcoming Age Bias in the Job Search" (9:45 a.m., Sept. 10, 130/131 Main Building, Great Valley campus): Penn State Great Valley and My Career Transitions will host "Overcoming Age Bias in the Job Search," a career management event.
  • Penn State Harrisburg Graduate School Picnic (2:30 p.m., Sept. 11, Sunset Golf Course, 2601 Sunset Dr., Middletown, Pennsylvania): New and returning students and their families can enjoy food, games and prizes at the graduate student and family picnic.
  • Penn State Harrisburg Graduate School Open House (6 p.m., Library Building, Harrisburg campus): Event will feature an opportunity to learn about Penn State Harrisburg's more than 30 graduate programs, meet with faculty and staff and get admissions and financial aid information.
  • Great Valley to University Park Trip (8 a.m., Sept. 14, Main Building, Great Valley campus): Penn State Great Valley is offering a bus trip to University Park campus for students interested in attending Fall Career Days. Registration is required.
  • Penn State Harrisburg Graduate Coffee Hour (4 p.m., Thursdays, Gallery Lounge, Olmsted Building, Harrisburg campus): Social opportunity for Penn State Harrisburg graduate students every Thursday.
