HERSHEY, Pa. — David Swift, a central Pennsylvania native with broad experience in human resources, has been appointed chief human resources officer for Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and associate vice president for human resources for health affairs at Penn State. In this role, Swift will oversee all human resources functions for the Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine.
Swift, a New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, native, joins the Medical Center and College of Medicine from the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore, where he has been chief human resource officer and senior vice president for the past three years. He is well-positioned to guide the human resources function of a growing health system: At Maryland, he served as the architect of a system-wide human resources function that serves a 12-hospital system, including a university health center, community hospitals, a children’s hospital, a rehabilitation hospital, a medical group of employed physicians, and more than 23,500 employees. In that role and previous positions with Maryland General Hospital and Kernan Rehabilitation Hospital, Forum Health in Youngstown, Ohio, and Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, New York, Swift demonstrated a particular commitment to human resources customer service and efficiency, employee wellness and engagement, and leadership development.
Swift served in the U.S. Air Force, holding various leadership and training positions during a 21-year career. He earned a bachelor of science in business and management from the University of Maryland University College and a master of science in health care administration from Capella University.
Swift starts in his role at Hershey on Oct. 3.
