UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Vilmos Misangyi, professor of management and organization, has assumed the role of chair of the Department of Management and Organization in the Penn State Smeal College of Business.
He succeeds Dennis Gioia, Robert and Judith Auritt Klein Professor of Management, who served as chair for the past nine years.
“My predecessor is passing on a top-notch department in every aspect,” Misangyi said. “ Our department has been ranked among the top five research productive management faculties in the world in all but one year over the past 10 years. Our faculty are among the best teachers in the college, and they serve the profession through editorships and editorial board memberships. They also run three different centers that effectively support students, practitioners, researchers and the local community.
“What I hope to do as chair of our department is to work as a facilitator who helps our faculty continue to maintain our department’s level of excellence on all counts and at the same time personally contribute to this excellence by remaining a productive scholar and effective teacher.”
Misangyi was also recently awarded the BNY Mellon Fellowship. Established in 1989, the fellowship recognizes an outstanding faculty researcher and assists the holder in furthering his or her contribution in teaching, research and public service.
Misangyi said he feels fortunate that both achievements happened in a relatively short period of time.
“I feel deeply honored to have my research recognized and to have the support of my colleagues,” he said.
Misangyi’s research takes a social and behavioral approach to examining how top executives and organizations influence — and are influenced by — their surrounding environments. Underlying the majority of his research is a concern with managerial and organizational wrongdoing. He is also very interested in research methodologies.
Misangyi teaches the core strategic management courses in the Penn State Smeal MBA and Executive MBA Programs, as well as an MBA elective on power and influence. He recently served as an associate editor of the Academy of Management Review. He also serves on several journal editorial boards.
Misangyi holds a doctoral degree in strategic management from the University of Florida and a bachelor’s in financial administration from Michigan State University.
