UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State issued its annual drinking water quality report Friday, June 17, and is pleased to report that it successfully met every federal and state regulatory requirement in 2015. Penn State routinely monitors the University’s drinking water, and the full report can be viewed on the Office of Physical Plant website.
Penn State operates its own potable water system and wastewater treatment facilities. More than 800 million gallons of potable water is supplied annually to the University Park community. Penn State’s water is treated and tested at multiple locations to ensure community safety. The University’s holistic water management strategy includes the wise use of this valuable resource. Penn State has reduced its water consumption by 19 percent since 2005, despite the fact that enrollment has increased and more than 1 million square feet of new building space has been added.
To ensure that tap water is safe to drink, both the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection prescribe regulations to limit the amount of contaminants in water provided by public systems. Thanks to the efforts of Penn State’s Office of Physical Plant, University Park has reduced the consumption of water with environmental benefits.
