Penn State Health expanding access to primary care in Cumberland County

New family medicine practice to open in Mechanicsburg area in spring 2017

HERSHEY, Pa. — Penn State Health is moving forward with plans for an outpatient practice in Cumberland County that will improve access to primary care health services for Mechanicsburg- and Carlisle-area residents.

In early spring 2017, Penn State Medical Group — the physician practice group affiliated with Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center — expects to open a new practice on the West Shore, located in Silver Spring Township along Route 114 and near the Mechanicsburg exit off Interstate 81. The future Penn State Medical Group practice site in Mechanicsburg is located on a 5.9-acre lot approximately 9 miles west of the medical group practice in Camp Hill.

The proposed building will include 13,000 square feet of clinical space. The family practice outpatient clinic will include 14 exam rooms, staff work areas, patient waiting areas, and clinical support space in the initial build-out of 9,000 square feet. The additional 4,000 square feet will remain shell space, with an anticipated future addition of up to 14 more exam rooms. The current estimated cost for the project is $4.3 million.

The construction of the new Mechanicsburg practice — with its easy access from I-81 and Route 11 — allows Penn State Health to better meet the health care needs of Cumberland County by offering more convenient primary care services to growing populations in the Mechanicsburg and Carlisle areas. Patients seen at the Mechanicsburg practice who require additional diagnostic or therapeutic services, such as lab work or physical therapy, or those who need referrals to medical or surgical specialty care, will be able to access these services at the Camp Hill practice site.

Penn State Medical Group intends to open the new practice with three family medicine providers and nine staff members. Land development at the Mechanicsburg site is expected to begin within the next month to six weeks.
