Program leads to bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering in five years

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — Penn State Harrisburg now offers an option for bachelor of science candidates in civil engineering to enroll in an integrated, continuous program of study that will also allow them to earn a master of engineering in environmental engineering. The ability to coordinate as well as concurrently pursue both degree programs enables students to earn the two degrees in five years.

“These programs offer exceptional students the opportunity to develop long-range academic goals, work with graduate faculty in advancing research and knowledge, and be academically challenged to match the level of their abilities,” said Peter Idowu, assistant dean for graduate studies. “Programs such as this are an efficient, economical way for students to complete a graduate degree.”

In the civil engineering program, emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of civil engineering principles and design techniques. The program allows for flexible scheduling, enabling students to focus on one of the following concentration areas: construction, environmental, general, transportation and structural.

The master of engineering in environmental engineering program focuses on the delivery of clean water to the public, plus the prevention and treatment of environmental pollutants, such as treating wastewater, stormwater and hazardous waste. The program has a strong water focus as a result of the campus’ location in the Lower Susquehanna River watershed, a critical drainage area that affects the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay.

“We are excited to provide this opportunity to our exceptional undergraduate students in civil engineering,” said Shirley Clark, program coordinator for the environmental engineering master’s program. “Giving students the opportunity to further develop their knowledge in environmental engineering is critical in an era where environmental pollution is posing new challenges to our health and sustainability. We look forward to supplying the region with more environmental engineers who have this advanced knowledge.”

Civil and environmental engineering courses are offered regularly, as are specialty courses in environmental policy, other engineering areas, computer science and other policy-related areas.

Applications are now being accepted for fall 2016. For future years, applications will be accepted starting in January of that year. To apply or for more information, visit http://bit.ly/1YWlOJt or contact Shirley Clark at sec16@psu.edu
