Penn College to hold spring commencement May 13-14

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Commencement will be held May 13-14 for the nearly 1,000 students who have petitioned to graduate following the spring semester at the Pennsylvania College of Technology.Three ceremonies will be offered at the Community Arts Center, located at 220 W. Fourth St. in Williamsport, with more than 800 students expected to march.At 3 p.m. on Friday, May 13, a ceremony will be held for students from the School of Industrial, Computing & Engineering Technologies and the School of Sciences, Humanities & Visual Communications.On Saturday, May 14, there are two ceremonies scheduled. At 10 a.m., students from the School of Construction & Design Technologies and the School of Health Sciences will receive their degrees. At 1:30 p.m., a ceremony will be offered for students from the School of Business & Hospitality and the School of Transportation & Natural Resources Technologies.The student speaker on May 13 will be Anthony David Gobbi, of Haymarket, Virginia, who will receive a bachelor’s degree in building automation technology. Previously, he earned an associate degree in heating ventilation and air conditioning technology from Penn College. He was Student of the Month in October 2014.Gobbi served as president of the Penn College chapter of Phi Mu Delta fraternity in 2014-15 and was its social chair for two years. He is a student ambassador and a founder of Blue Crew, a campus pride and loyalty organization. He is a recipient of the New Student Leader Award and the Penn College Award. He will work for U&S Services in Buffalo, New York, after graduation.The student speaking at the 10 a.m. ceremony on May 14 is Cortney Lyn Weaver, of Williamsport, who will receive an associate degree in dental hygiene.Weaver will receive the Susquehanna Health Dental Hygiene Award before commencement, and she is a Dental Hygiene Scholarship recipient. She is president of the Penn College chapter of the Student American Dental Hygienists' Association and served as a tutor for dental hygiene students. She is a member of Penn College’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.She will begin working for the Silberg Center for Dental Science in Pittsburgh following commencement.The student speaker for the 1:30 p.m. ceremony on May 14 is Jessica Rose Wiegand, of Trout Run, who will receive a bachelor’s degree in business administration: marketing concentration. She will receive the Business Management Faculty Award before commencement.Wiegand serves as president of the Penn College chapter of Alpha Chi National College Honor Society and is a member of the Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society in Business. She was the Penn College Student of the Month in September 2015 and was honored as an Awesome Woman Exemplar at Penn College in 2011. She serves as external relations officer for College Women of Williamsport. She was a member of Penn College’s cross-country team in 2014-15.Previously, she was an autism spectrum disorder social mentor, vice president of public relations for the Student Government Association, and re-founder/director for community for Blue Crew at Penn College. She also served as a Penn College Connections Link/orientation leader, as vice president of the Off Campus Housing Organization, and as senator of health sciences with SGA.She will work at Venture Outdoors in Pittsburgh following graduation.During the ceremonies, the college will present several awards to alumni: a Distinguished Alumni Award, an Alumni Achievement Award and a Volunteer of the Year Award.Degrees will be conferred by Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour, accompanied on May 13 by Penn College Board of Directors member Steven P. Johnson and on May 14 by state Sen.
