American Art Lecture Series talk to focus on lynching, politics and race

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Carmenita Higginbotham, associate professor at the University of Virginia's McIntire Department of Art, will present "Lynching, Politics and the Spectacle of Race: Reginald Marsh circa 1934" at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, at the Palmer Museum of Art.

Higginbotham's lecture is part of the American Art Lecture Series and is free and open to the public.

Her discussion will focus on American artist Reginald Marsh and his targeted response to the topic of lynching. The talk will explore how Marsh's deployment of racial language in the 1934 drawing "This is Her First Lynching" allowed for politically nuanced readings of the black body and the exhibition of violence.
