UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A team of faculty, staff and students from the Penn State Center for Integrated Healthcare Delivery Systems (CIHDS) will be participating at the National Science Foundation (NSF) Center for Health Organization Transformation (CHOT) Industry Advisory Board spring meeting April 7-8 at the Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.
Directed by Harriet Nembhard, professor of industrial engineering, CIHDS is one of four current CHOT University sites, along with research centers at Georgia Tech, Northeastern University and Texas A&M University.
The five proposals that will be presented in Houston by the CIHDS team are:
- Value-based Care: Challenges in a Changing Program
- Integration of Genomic Data for Precision Health Decision Support
- Sensing Systems for Personalized Telehealth Wellness Management
- A Person-Centered Approach for Individuals with Multiple Chronic Conditions
- Demand Management for Community Paramedicine
In addition to Nembhard, those representing Penn State and CIHDS at the meeting will be: Harleah Buck, assistant professor, College of Nursing; Chris DeFlitch, vice chair, clinical operations and chief medical information officer, Penn State Hershey; Mehmet Kilinc, post-doctoral scholar, industrial engineering; Lisa Korman, assistant director, CIHDS; Conrad Tucker, assistant professor of engineering design and industrial engineering, College of Engineering; and industrial engineering graduate students Nathaniel Bastian, Michael Hoffman, Linlin Ma, Eric Swenson and Yifeng Yu.
In addition to CHOT researchers, industry partners will be in attendance from such organizations as AT&T, Hershey Medical Center, Highmark, Siemens, Siemens One Alliance and others.
The meeting will also include a tour of the Cyber-Physical System for the Hospital Operating Room Center at Houston Methodist Hospital.
As a NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Center, CHOT follows a model of an industry-academic partnership that has benefited industry-focused research across more than 50 disciplines.
CHOT creates a safe, mutually beneficial, cooperative environment in which leading health care industry members can come together in collaboration to support important transformation initiatives addressing health organization management and services; examine the implementation of transformational strategies; partner with health care management researchers to improve such initiatives and strategies; participate in research in a cost-effective manner; and play a critical role in shaping the education of future health care leaders as managers, engineers and health professionals.
