Standardized testing questioned in documentary 'Tested'

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. –Equity in standardized testing gets a critical look in Curtis Chin’s documentary, "Tested," which will be shown on March 24.

"Tested" will be screened from 5-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, in Foster Auditorium on the University Park campus of Penn State, and is open to the public.

The film follows 12 racially and socioeconomically diverse eighth graders as they fight for a seat at a New York City school, for which they must ace a requisite standardized test.

Including voices of education experts, such as Pedro Noguera and Diane Ravitch, "Tested" explores issues from access to high quality public education to affirmative action and the model-minority myth.

Filmmaker and activist Curtis Chin will be speaking following the screening. His first documentary, "Vincent Who?" has been widely screened and won several awards, and he has co-founded several activist groups for Asian Americans.

Sponsors of the film are the Diversity and Community Enhancement Committee and the Curriculum and Instruction Graduate Student Association.
