Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence offering free teaching workshops

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will be offering three free teaching workshops between now and the end of February.

-- “Learning Outcomes Assessment for Beginners” will be presented from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, via Adobe Connect. The workshop will be repeated from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, also via Abode Connect.

Are you new to the learning outcomes assessment process? Are you unsure what you need to be doing now to meet Penn State’s June 1 deadline for learning outcomes assessment reports? If so, this event is for you. We will walk briefly through the steps of the process and point you to the resources that are available to help you along.

-- “Providing Effective Feedback for ESL Writers” will be presented by Dmitri Detwyler from the Multilingual Writers Research Group from noon to 1:15 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 29, in 315 Rider Building at University Park

This workshop is designed to help instructors respond to multilingual students’ writing in ways that are more targeted, helpful, and time-efficient. The workshop covers strategies for deciding what to comment on in students’ writing (including which grammar errors to address), how many comments to give, and how to structure comments to improve students’ learning.

-- “Creating Inclusive Courses: Not Your Typical Diversity Workshop,” facilitated by Angela Linse, executive director of the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence and associate dean, and Suzanne Weinstein, director of Instructional Consulting, Assessment and Research, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Feb. 29, in 101-102 Misciagna at Penn State Altoona. The workshop will be repeated from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 29 in 201 SCEE at Penn State Altoona.

What makes this diversity workshop different? Our goal is neither to convince nor persuade. Instead, we assume that you already agree that diversity is important, that you want to teach inclusively, and that you are ready and willing to change. During this workshop you will:

  • Recognize that you can take action that matters
  • Make decisions about which actions are most relevant for your courses
  • Identify impediments to creating inclusive class environments
  • Explore strategies for addressing two of the most elusive challenges to inclusive teaching

Registration for all workshops is available at https://www.schreyerinstitute.psu.edu/register/AvailableEvents.aspx.
