'Five @ Five' lectures invite community to explore the magic of filmmaking

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Penn State Lehigh Valley Continuing Education has announced a new topic for its spring "Five @ Five" lecture series, which features five one-and-a-half hour lectures on a given topic in order to provide an in-depth series.

Katina Sossiadis Bozikis, instructor in film at Penn State Lehigh Valley, will present the spring series, "Exploration of Oscar Winning Films." Bozikis will cover topics such as genre, messages or themes, the magic of filmmaking through cinematography and lighting, writers and their scripts, dialogue and character, and how the power of film today has changed from film of the past.

Lectures will be held at 5 p.m. on the following Thursday evenings: March 24 and 31, and April 7, 14 and 21 at the Lehigh Valley campus located at 2809 Saucon Valley Road in Center Valley.

The lecture series is open to the public and the cost is $59 per person, or $89 for two people from the same household.

The series will take a look at the following Academy Award winners:

March 24: "Unforgiven" directed by Clint Eastwood

March 31: "American Beauty" directed by Sam Mendes

April 7: "The King's Speech" directed by Tom Hooper

April 14: "Crash" directed by Paul Haggis

April 21: "Birdman" directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu
