Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence holding workshops for new instructors

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence is offering two new free workshops, “New Instructor Orientation” and “When Your Hands are Tied: Personalizing 'Inherited' Lesson Plans and Syllabi.”

“New Instructor Orientation” is an online, self-directed workshop open to all new instructors at Penn State. It is offered at the start of each semester through Angel, Penn State’s course management system. Moderated by Cindy Decker Raynak, senior instructional designer, this self-directed workshop will provide you with a brief introduction to the resources and strategies that are crucial to good teaching and planning.

This workshop opened on Monday, Jan. 11, and will continue through Friday, Feb. 26. The last time to register is noon on Wednesday, Feb. 24. All assignments must be uploaded by 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 26.

“When Your Hands are Tied: Personalizing 'Inherited' Lesson Plans and Syllabi” will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, in 315 Rider Building on the University Park campus.

Are you taking over a course and feel bound by preexisting lesson plans and syllabi? Your hands may not be so tightly tied as you first thought. Graduate consultants Lauren Brooks and David Favre lead this interactive workshop for developing strategies to take ownership of your course and to integrate your own teaching beliefs and practices into its design.
