Penn State Hershey benefits from recent donations

From time to time, Penn State Hershey benefits from the generosity of organizations that raise money for its programs and services. Some recent donations include the following:

  • Girls Night Out Altoona, Inc. raised $29,000 for breast cancer research at the Medical Center. The funds raised in the October event will support the research of Craig Meyers, distinguished professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and his work with the AAV2 virus. Meyers has investigated the AAV2 virus in various forms of breast cancer and spoke at Girls Night Out Altoona to thank attendees for their support of his work. Girls Night Out Altoona, Inc., an annual fundraising dinner, brings together breast cancer survivors, family, friends and supporters at the Jaffa Shrine in Altoona to raise money and celebrate all things “pink.” Over the past eight years, the organization’s fundraising efforts have raised more than $166,000 for breast cancer research at Penn State Hershey. Next year’s Girls Night Out Altoona is scheduled for Oct. 19.
  • The eighth annual Driving for a Cure Kenneth F. Noel Memorial Golf Tournament raised $12,000 for Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute. The event was held on Sept. 12 at Flatbush Golf Course in Littlestown.  Over the past eight years, Driving for a Cure has contributed more than $87,000 for the oncology and hematology research efforts of Dr. David F. Claxton. Noel’s wife, children and friends host the golf outing each year to honor Ken’s memory. Next year’s tournament is scheduled for Sept. 10.
  • Tanger Outlet Center at Hershey donated more than $1,900 to the Stanley K. Tanger Breast Cancer Fund at Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute. In October, the Outlet Center hosted its annual Pink Style fundraising campaign. Powerful Pink Cards were sold for $5 and provided Tanger customers with 25 percent off a single item at participating Outlet stores. In all, Tanger Outlet Center at Hershey has contributed more than $20,000 to the Stanley K. Tanger Breast Cancer Fund.
