Projects for Amphenol Advanced Sensors, Maximus V take first at design showcase

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The winners of the fall Engineering Design Showcase were announced on Thursday, Dec. 10, at the Bryce Jordan Center.

The event was the culmination of a semester-long effort by students to solve real-world challenges posed by industry sponsors and other clients. Participants included first-year students through seniors across multiple engineering disciplines.

Two projects came in first place for the Lockheed Martin Design Award for best project: "Temperature Response Time Test Bench" for Amphenol Advanced Sensors by Kevin Cass, Derek King, Harrison Ruhl and Shawn Siroka, advised by Savas Yavuzkurt, professor of mechanical engineering; and "Presh Technology" for Maximus V LLC by Nicole Baer, Chris Hemmerich, Hanah Naushad, Anthony Paterno and Javier Villalba, advised by Allen Kimel, assistant professor of materials science and engineering.

Second place for best project went to "Probe Positioning System" for GE Inspection Technologies by Dylan Dailey, Benjamin Kilheffer, Joe Mertz and Rachel Shenck, advised by Timothy Wheeler, assistant professor of electrical engineering; and "Augmented Reality Robotic" for Solid Dynamics, LLC by Houston Claure, Chris Esposito, Nick Rossi and Ross Wingard, advised by Matthew Parkinson, associate professor of engineering design and mechanical engineering.

Three projects came in third place: "Eddy Current Damper" for Dresser-Rand - A Siemens Business by Patrick Cathrall, Anthony Farole, Connor Lapiska, David Reed and Gregory Schnur, advised by Asok Ray, Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering; "Autonomous Truck Braking Systems" for Fuel Mileage Dr. by Ali Alsuwaidi, William Baker, Jacob Bashore and Omar Fernandez, advised by Wheeler; and "VTOL Cargo Mission" for the Boeing Company by Christopher Heckle, Rachel Perini, Milos Radosavljevic and Matthew Woods, advised by Wallace Catanach, instructor in engineering design.

The best poster award went to three teams: "Optimizing a Supercritical CO2 Heat Exchanger for Small Modular Reactor" for Bechtel by Alaina Bott, Cliff Hill, Joe Patchett and Joseph Weaver, advised by Yavuzkurt; "Food Centres" for New Leaf Initiative by Zhuohang Cai, Cory Kopa, Rodrigo Gomez Mendoza and Yixin Sun, advised by Harriet Black Nembhard, professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering; and "Arboretum Visitor Tracker" for The Arboretum at Penn State by Joseph Donohoe, Renee Frohnert, Parker Reusch and Joshua Rush, advised by Wheeler.

The BP People's Choice Award went to "Ecomarathon Engine Team" for Shell by Adrian Baran, Chelsea Moore, Harshil Patel, Opal Shah and Michael Slodysko, advised by Gary Neal, instructor in mechanical engineering.

James Haldeman from Bechtel received the Best Sponsor Award.
