Faculty member named editor of top communications journal

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A Penn State faculty member has been selected as editor-in-chief of Mass Communication and Society, a leading journal published by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

Fuyuan Shen, an associate professor in the Department of Advertising/Public Relations in the College of Communications, was selected by a committee made up of editorial members, division officers and one representative from the publishing company for the position.

“I am honored to be selected as the next editor-in-chief for Mass Communication and Society,” said Shen. “I look forward to working with the editorial board and communication scholars in fulfilling the journal’s mission to publish high quality research in mass communication.”

Shen will serve as editor-elect in 2016 and will start as editor-in-chief in 2017. A term is three years, with an option to serve two terms. As editor-in-chief, Shen will take on a variety of responsibilities.

“My main responsibilities are to manage the peer reviews of papers submitted to the journal, make decisions about manuscripts based on recommendations from the associated editors, work with the publisher in ensuring the timely publication of each issue, and provide leadership on journal-related initiatives,” said Shen.

Shen’s research focus at Penn State is strategic communications and media effects, with much of his work being published in the field’s top journals. Currently, he is a research consultant for the World Bank and recently served as an associate editor for the Asian Journal of Communication.

Mass Communication and Society spans both traditional disciplines, such as advertising, public relations and journalism, and newer, convergent areas of study. It also encourages a variety of methodological approaches to the study of media and its many societal influences.

AEJMC is a nonprofit, educational association of journalism and mass communication educators, students and media professionals. The association’s mission is to advance education in journalism, foster scholarly research, cultivate better professional practice and promote the free flow of communication.
