UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Arts and Design Research Incubator (ADRI) will present two events about ALS and speech modification on Tuesday, Nov. 17, featuring Andrea Caban, a professor of voice and speech at California State University at Long Beach who wrote and now performs a one-woman show about a woman living with ALS. From noon to 1 p.m., Caban will speak about “Voicework, Accent Modification and ALS: A Case Study in Prolonging the Ability to Speak.” At 5:30 p.m., she will present a workshop production of her one-woman show, “Voice Bank,” about a woman with ALS who fights for the ability to keep speaking. Both events, free and open to the public, take place in 16 Borland Building.
In her noontime lecture, Caban, who is associate director and master teacher of Knight-Thompson Speechwork, will discuss how she helped a woman with ALS make specific accent and breathing changes to prolong her ability to speak as long as possible. After being trained in the first part of Knight-Thompson Speechwork, the client, an actress, was able to speak more easily, although her voice was very different from her “original voice.” The presentation will include video of the subject’s speech both before and after her work with Caban.
At 5:30 p.m., Caban will present her one-woman show, directed by Amanda McRaven, about her client, Terry. Caban plays both herself and Terry, who she helps to manage her progressing symptoms.
