Academy Award-nominated film on climate change to be screened Oct. 29

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Center for Global Studies (CGS) and School of International Affairs (SIA) will be joining together to host a film screening and panel discussion of the Academy Award-nominated film “Sun Come Up.” Penn State faculty members Lara Fowler, senior lecturer in Penn State Law and a research fellow in the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment, and Sinfree Makoni, associate professor of applied linguistics and African studies, will lead the panel discussion. Sophia McClennen, director of CGS and associate director of SIA, will moderate the discussion.

The event, which will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Penn State Lewis Katz Auditorium, is intended to provoke discussion about climate change, displacement, and the rights of vulnerable communities around the globe.

“Sun Come Up” shows the human face of climate change. The film follows the relocation of the Carteret Islanders, a community living on a remote island chain in the South Pacific Ocean, and now, some of the world’s first environmental refugees.
