UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- If you’re looking for a free, family-friendly, educational and entertaining activity this Sunday, Sept. 20, artsUP is for you. The public event, presented by the College of Arts and Architecture from noon to 5 p.m. in the Arts District on the north end of the University Park campus, will include performances, exhibitions, demonstrations, hands-on workshops and more. Highlights include:
Noon– 1 p.m.: Improv with Richard Robichaux, head of acting in the School of Theatre (114 Theatre Building). This think-on-your feet, active workshop is an opportunity to have some fun while working with a professional whose experience spans the stage, television and film, including the Golden Globe-winning film “Boyhood.”
12:30–1:30 p.m.: Suminagashi demo/workshop (204 Patterson Building). Learn about the ancient practice of paper marbling, where sumi ink is floated on the surface of water, coaxed into flowing liquid shapes, and then transferred to paper or fabric.
1:30–2:30 p.m.: Discipline of Play: Building Resiliency, Igniting Innovation. Actor, comedienne and educator Sandi Carroll will discuss how to integrate play into your work. Laughter is guaranteed in this workshop, which is geared toward those 18 and older. The workshop will take place in 16 Borland, the Arts and Design Research Incubator (ADRI), where Carroll is a research scholar.
2–3 p.m.: The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will rehearse from 2 to 2:30 p.m. in Esber Recital Hall, and the Bass Ensemble will perform from 2:30 to 3 p.m. in the Walters Courtyard.
2:30–4 p.m.: Tour the exhibition “Archipenko: A Modern Legacy” at the Palmer Museum of Art. Exhibition curator Alexandra Keiser from the Archipenko Foundation will be on hand to speak with visitors.
4–5 p.m.: Free concert by New Orleans brass band The Soul Rebels in Eisenhower Auditorium. Tickets are required and are available at Eisenhower Auditorium, the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center and the HUB-Robeson Center Information Desk (any remaining tickets on the day of the event will be available at Eisenhower Auditorium only).
Members of the Blue Band will kick off artsUP at noon, marching from Eisenhower Auditorium to the Palmer Museum via Curtin Road. Curtin Road will be closed from Shortlidge Road to North Allen Street for the duration of artsUP.
A variety of events will take from noon through 5 p.m., including a demonstration of the edible green wall at the Stuckeman Family Building, a demonstration of the digital fabrication of prosthetic limbs in the Stuckeman Family Building, and creation of a collaborative sculpture in front of the Palmer Museum of Art. From 1 to 5 p.m., School of Music instrumental and choral ensembles will perform continually in Esber Recital Hall and the Walters Courtyard.
