DURHAM, N.C. -- The Penn State men’s golf team wrapped up the Rod Myers Invitational with a third-place finish Sunday afternoon at the Duke University Golf Course in Durham. All five Nittany Lions finished in the top half of the tournament field, led by Charles Huntzinger’s 10th-place performance.
The freshman from Duluth, Georgia, started off slow on the front nine, but birdied three out of five holes on the back to finish a team-leading 2-over par on the day. At No. 10, Huntzinger was the highest-finishing rookie in the tourney.
“It was nice to go into the south and get a big result,” Nittany Lion head coach Greg Nye said. “Charles and Geoff both played awesome throughout the event.”
Geoff Vartelas, a senior captain from Cromwell, Connecticut, finished in a tie for the No. 21 spot after tallying a 76 on the day. Fellow senior captain JD Dornes moved up six spots since Saturday, tying Huntzinger with a team-leading 74-stroke performance Sunday.
Sophomore Cole Miller and freshman Ryan Dornes wrapped up the tourney tied for 34th place, moving up three spots after the final found. The pair both carded a 76 in the third round.
Wake Forest won the tournament with a 2-under showing over three rounds, followed by host Duke (-1). East Carolina and Kansas followed Penn State to round out the top five.
The Nittany Lions return to action Monday, Sept. 28, at the Primland Collegiate at the Primland Resort in Dan, Virginia. They finished third at the event a year ago led by Miller and an overall third-place showing.
