Beverly Cigler, distinguished professor of public policy and administration in Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Public Affairs, has received the 2015 Leslie A. Whittington Award for Excellence in Teaching, given by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA).

NASPAA is the membership organization of graduate education programs in public policy, public affairs, public administration, and public and nonprofit management, with nearly 300 members worldwide. The Excellence in Teaching Award, first presented in 1993, recognizes faculty members at NASPAA institutions who make outstanding contributions to public service education through excellence in teaching over a sustained period of time.

In support of Cigler’s nomination for the award, students wrote that Cigler “was instrumental in instilling in me a love for research and teaching, a dedication to service to the field, and a very strong work ethic” and “she is a true transformational leader. Today, I strive to be the same.”

Cigler, of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, was named a distinguished professor by Penn State earlier this year. The title recognizes a select group of professors who have achieved exceptional accomplishments in teaching, research and service. Cigler has held numerous leadership positions in public administration organizations and served on 15 editorial boards. Currently, she serves on the boards of the Keystone Research Center (PA) and the South Central Assembly (PA) and on advisory committees for the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania; the Association of Pennsylvania Municipal Managers; the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center; the Metropolitan Policy Center (University of Pittsburgh); and the National Center for the Study of Counties.

The award will be presented Oct. 15, at the NASPAA annual conference in New York.
