Expect road closures during Sept. 7 Color Run

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Color Run Shine Tour 15 will be held on the Penn State campus Monday, Sept. 7 beginning at 9 a.m., and is expected to bring thousands of participants and more than 200 volunteers to campus.

Due to the large number of participants and the unique attributes associated with the Color Run, several campus roadways will be closed prior to the start of the event at 9 a.m. To ensure the safety of all participants, all traffic will be prohibited from the course once the run begins.

The course will be the standard 5K route beginning on Porter Road south of Medlar Field, turning west on Hastings Road, crossing University Drive to Bigler Road, following Bigler Road north to Pollock Road, turning west on Pollock Road to Burrowes Road, turning north on Burrowes Road to Curtin Road, then returning east on Curtin Road to Porter Road.

Below is a list of road closures related to the Color Run. For more details about the event, including a course map, visit the Penn State Color Run website at http://thecolorrun.com/penn-state/.

Roads closed 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday for the 5K Run:

  • Porter Road (from Curtin Road to Hastings Road) - access to Lot 44 will be maintained from Curtin Road or via Dauer Drive only.
  • Hastings Road (from Porter Road to Bigler Road) - access to Orange H, Lot 43, Lot 83 east and west will be maintained from Porter Road and University Drive until the event begins.
  • Pollock Road (from Bigler Road to Burrowes Road) - access to Old Main and Lot Brown C, and access to Allen Road and Lot Brown E will be maintained from Shortlidge Road and Bigler Road until the event begins.
  • Burrowes Road (from Pollock Road to Curtin Road) - Burrowes Road, Curtin Road extension, and access to Lots Red H and Green C will remain open until the event begins.
  • Curtin Road (from Burrowes Road to Porter Road) - access to Lots Yellow L, Yellow E Patterson, Yellow E Pavilion, Yellow R, Yellow H Wagner, IM, and Shields will be maintained until the event begins.
  • Access to and from Eisenhower Deck will be open until the event begins from Shortlidge Road and Bigler Road - emergency access only during the race.

Note: During the event, the roadways listed above will be closed to all vehicles. Parking lots adjacent to these roadways and those serviced by these roadways will be closed to all vehicles, with no entry or exit permitted. Students, staff and visitors needing access to their vehicle are advised to move to one of the parking areas that will remain open, such as the HUB Deck, East Deck, Nittany Deck, or Lot Red A.

Portions of the routes listed above will be opened as soon as the race is finished. Other portions will remain closed for additional cleanup (see below).

Roads closed 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday for the 5K Run and Color Zone Cleanup:

  • Hastings Road (from University Drive to Bigler Road) - emergency access only.
  • Pollock Road (from Shortlidge Road to McAllister Building) - emergency access only. Lots Brown C and Brown B remain closed.
  • Burrowes Road (from Pollock Road to Curtin Road) - access to Brown A and Red K will be maintained from Burrowes Road only.
  • Curtin Road (from University Drive to Porter Road) - emergency access only. Access to Yellow H at IM, Wagner, and Shields Buildings will reopen after the event has concluded.

Roads Open All Day Monday:

  • Shortlidge Road (from Pollock Road to College Avenue) - access to the HUB Deck and student Lot 81 will be maintained.
  • Shortlidge Road (from Park Avenue to Curtin Road) - access to Lots Green G Warnock, Green D Stuckeman, and Green J Borland will be maintained.
  • Bigler Road (from Park Ave. to Curtin Road) - access to the East Deck will be maintained.
  • Allen Road (from Park Avenue to Curtin Road) - access to the Nittany Deck, Lot Green B, and Green H will be maintained.
  • Burrowes Road (from College Avenue to Pollock Road) with access to Lot Brown A and Red K will be maintained.
  • University Drive will remain open throughout the race, but drivers should expect significant delays as racers cross University Drive at Hastings Road and Curtin Road. Drivers are encouraged to find an alternate route.

Transit Changes:

The following changes will be in effect for CATA services on Sept. 7:

RED LINK: The RED LINK will use Park Avenue instead of Curtin Road, traveling in both directions. There will be no service on Curtin Road or Porter Road during the event.

BLUE LOOP: There will be no BLUE LOOP service during the event. Buses normally scheduled to operate as BLUE LOOPs will instead provide service as additional WHITE LOOPs, using the detour below.

WHITE LOOP: The WHITE LOOP will service University Drive, turning left onto Park Avenue, left onto Atherton Street, and left onto Beaver Avenue, where it will resume its regular routing.

M (Nittany Mall) Route: The M Route will travel from University Drive to Park Avenue, making a left onto Atherton Street and a left onto Beaver Avenue, where it will resume its regular routing.

N (Martin St. /Aaron Dr.) Route: The N Route will travel from Atherton Street, turning left onto Park Avenue and right onto University Drive, where it will use the State College exit ramp, then turn left onto College Avenue to resume its regular routing.

NV (Havershire/Martin/Vairo/Toftrees) Route: The NV will travel from Fox Hollow Road, turning right onto Park Avenue and left onto University Drive, where it will resume its regular routing.

R (Waupelani Dr.) Route: The R Route will travel from Atherton Street, making a right onto Park Avenue and turning right onto University Drive, where it will use the State College exit ramp, then turn left onto College Avenue to resume its regular routing.

V (Vairo Blvd.) Route: The V Route will travel from Atherton Street, making a left onto Park Avenue and turning right onto University Drive, where it will use the State College exit ramp, then turn left onto College Avenue to resume its regular routing.

VN (Toftrees/Vairo/Martin/Havershire) Route: The VN Route will travel from University Drive, making a right onto Park Avenue and a left onto Fox Hollow Road to resume its normal routing.

To ensure the safety of those riding and to maintain the cleanliness of CATA's buses, riders are asked to bring a change of clothes or something to sit on or wrap up in if they will be riding the bus after the event.
