The numbers are in, and the first-ever downsizing and sustainability event held in the College of Communications proved to be a success.

In all, College of Communications members recycled 600 pounds of confidential shredding, approximately 1,100 pounds of mixed paper and approximately 50 pounds of media, which included DVDs, CDs and video tapes.

The first annual “Toss it, Shred it, Trash it!” day in the college was designed for faculty and staff to get rid of unnecessary files, both electronic and paper.

On July 22, faculty and staff members were provided with recycling bags and labeled bins where they could place hardcopy files that they were getting rid of. Members of the college dressed casually and received free pizza for participating.

Prizes were given to people who tossed, shredded, trashed or deleted the most unnecessary files.

Staff members worked closely with the Office of the Physical Plant and followed University records management protocol to format the day. The committee in charge of the event is planning to host similar events in the future during potentially slower times in the University’s academic calendar.
