Smeal names new chair, vice-chair of Board of Visitors

The Penn State Smeal College of Business has announced a leadership succession plan for the college’s Board of Visitors.

In early July, Lou Grabowsky, a 1973 graduate, ascended from vice-chair to chair. Julie McHugh, a 1986 graduate, assumed the role of vice-chair.

Grabowsky is co-founder of Juniper Capital Management, a private equity enterprise organized for the purpose of making control equity investments in high growth potential but under-resourced entrepreneurial companies based in the United States. He retired as a partner from Grant Thornton in July 2014.

McHugh is the past chief operating officer of Endo Pharmaceuticals. Prior to that, she was the CEO of Nora Therapeutics, Inc., a venture capital-backed biotech company focused on the treatment of infertility disorders.

“I am confident that the leadership of Lou and Julie will continue to help move the Smeal College of Business forward,” said Charles H. Whiteman, John and Becky Surma Dean of Smeal. “The Board of Visitors plays an important role at Smeal, keeping us connected to evolving issues in the business world with members acting as mentors and recruiters for our students.”

Grabowsky succeeds Lizabeth Zlatkus, a 1981 graduate, who led the board for the past three years.

“I would like to thank Liz for her dedication and leadership as chair of the board during the last three years,” Whiteman said. “She has worked tirelessly to influence the upward trajectory of the college. Her perspective has been invaluable to me as dean and I look forward to her continued input and support in the future.”

Zlatkus, an insurance industry veteran, was recently appointed to the Boston Private Financial Holdings, Inc. Board of Directors. She has also been elected to the Board of Directors of Boston Private Bank & Trust Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company.

The next Smeal College Board of Visitors meeting will be held Oct. 8 to 9.
