Taking holiday compensatory time for July 4

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — July 4 falls on a Saturday this year. Staff who do not work Saturday will receive holiday compensatory time, which can be taken after July 4.

Although classes will not be held July 3 at University Park and several other campuses, it is not a University holiday. Penn State policy states that if a University holiday falls on a staff employee's regularly scheduled day off, the employee instead receives holiday compensatory time to be used at another time. Therefore, staff who normally do not work Saturdays will receive holiday compensatory time for the July 4 holiday.

Holiday compensatory time cannot be taken before it is earned. Staff wishing to take off work on July 3 will be required to use a vacation day. The compensatory time can be taken after July 4. For example, employees taking off work on Friday, July 3, and Monday, July 6, would mark July 3 as a vacation day and July 6 as holiday compensatory time.

Staff employees should use earned compensatory time before vacation time except when an employee is at his or her maximum allotment of vacation time. Staff employees are then allowed to use vacation time before the compensatory time in order to avoid losing vacation.

To mark the holiday compensatory time as used on the attendance sheet, scroll down to box No. 3, "Description," on the Record Entry screen and select "Holiday compensatory time" for the date used. Complete the attendance record as usual and submit it. Then, on the "Paid Time Off" screen, enter 8 hours into the "Holiday compensatory hours earned" box, which is found below the vacation and sick leave boxes. For further questions, contact your area's human resources representative.
